About this Game:

Outward is an open-world fantasy RPG, developed by Canadian studio Nine Dots and published by Deep Silver. You play a commoner who must repay a debt to his family in a harsh world. Unlike most RPGs, this game focuses on survival amidst the natural hazards of your environment, as well as the idea of the player being a commoner rather than a powerful hero. It can be played in multiplayer, both online and locally via split-screen.

Survival:

What sets Outward apart from the classic RPG formula is its heavy emphasis on the survival genre. Its plot is simple enough and thrusts you into the vast and dangerous world of Auria, but it’s merely a tool to familiarize you with the necessities you’ll need to stock up on to survive. Outward doesn’t allow you to create a super-powered character that the world sees as its hero. Here, you’re just like any other character, facing various deadly enemies you’d typically encounter in the real world. These enemies range from the extreme temperatures of Oria’s regions to your physical needs like hunger and thirst. Some popular survival games focus heavily on this, but Outward combines it with classic RPG elements, such as leveling up, fighting enemies, and using magic. However, with Outward’s difficulty, even a simple flu can kill you.

Combat:

After the survival mechanics, comes the RPG combat in Outward. You can use the usual weapons, such as swords and bows, and you can even acquire the ability to use magic. However, compared to the survival aspects, Outward’s combat is lacking. The difficulty is reminiscent of Dark Souls, but it’s a bit slow and poorly executed once you start fighting. You can’t level up easily with your weapons; you have to train with an NPC or complete quests to acquire your skills. Even acquiring magic takes time, as it requires first unlocking the ability to use mana. This isn’t the game for button-mashers. Given the speed of combat, you need to plan your moves accordingly and not waste your energy—this improves the survival mechanics.

Team Up:

Outward brings back the great old split-screen feature with a multiplayer mode. You can connect with your teammates online or locally and share your screen with them. It’s always nice to have someone watching over you, especially in a game that’s passively trying to kill you, but constantly trying. With a companion, you can now decide how difficult the game is for you. However, you shouldn’t fear dying too much in Outward. Unlike other games, you’ll faint here when you fail to survive—and you’ll wake up to unique situations each time you do. Maybe you’ve been robbed or saved by a kind stranger, so things will always be different. Outward also doesn’t use a save and load feature. The game is a continuous story with auto-saving, so there’s no need to reload the game to change your fate. This can be interesting or annoying depending on your preference, but regardless, it makes for a unique gameplay experience every time you replay the game.

Better at Survival:

Outward undoubtedly excels at bringing something unique to RPGs. However, as an RPG in its own right, Outward is clearly disappointing. Its graphics are dated, which is unfortunate for a game released in 2019. Character customization itself offers few options for creating a unique character, and all of them look pretty bad with the graphics. You can play Outward for the challenging survival aspects, but if you’re looking for a better RPG, there are plenty of options that outperform it.
