Stronghold Crusader II is easy to play and content-wise, but unfortunately, its interface is not. Right from the start, players will be dazzled by its small, cluttered menus, which contrast with the game’s polished graphics. Worse still, the mouse-based game management interface feels hastily and haphazardly designed, without incorporating the mechanics that form the foundation of today’s strategy games.

The commands you can issue to your units are limited, and there are no text bubbles explaining how to use the available options. It’s not possible to issue orders sequentially, and selecting a unit isn’t easy. This is particularly bad for a game released in 2014, four years after Starcraft II set the standard for modern strategy games in terms of interface.

Technically speaking, Stronghold Crusader II performs well. Although the graphics engine isn’t impressive, the game is pleasing to the eye thanks to its attention to detail. Units feature well-crafted animations, and the screen is filled with small elements that add a sense of life and realism to the entire game. Resources appear and disappear in real time with storage, and battles are stunning to watch. The only thing missing is the building animation, a detail that doesn’t detract from the fun of playing Stronghold Crusader II.

If you enjoyed the previous Stronghold games, don’t hesitate: you can enjoy this new installment without worry. The content and gameplay are undisputedly top-notch, and you can enjoy excellent multiplayer, as well as a long, well-thought-out campaign. This isn’t to say the game is without flaws, particularly its annoying interface, which doesn’t offer even a quarter of what you’d expect from a modern real-time strategy game. An unfortunate fact that may deter some, but it’s not so serious as to spoil the fun of building your own castle while launching constant attacks on a fort.
